I recently took a big step in to a new element of my career that I never thought I could do. I made a decision to further the design side of my job and study a course in Adobe Illustrator. the idea being that I would eventually be able to sell my repeating patterns to fabric companies. This is all a very convoluted way of saying that I am studying to become a Surface Pattern Designer.
I have always had a dream of creating my own fabric line. it is something I have dreamed about for a long time and I feel like I am finally in a position to make it a reality.
I studied 3D design at college before I left and opened a fabric shop with my Mum when I was in my 20's and ever since then I have imagined what it would be like to see my designs on fabric.
In recent years after renewing my love in product design again for my own products a fabric line seems like it is more achievable than ever. I do however need to hone my technical skills a little more before I feel confident enough to put myself out there with designs I believe in and am proud of. I am so excited to jump back in to learning something new and cant wait to see where it takes me.
I have been lucky enough to find a community set up and run by one of my favourite fabric designers Bonnie Christine and have joined her Flourish group which is an amazing membership program. This has really inspired me to follow my dream of becoming a pattern designer and given me so many insights in to my existing business too.
Is there something that you have always wanted to do? What do you think it is that is stopping you from taking that step to your dream?
